The cold weather has certainly set in - but cold weather doesn’t necessarily mean a boring garden. If you’re lucky enough to have a Camellia sasanqua growing it should be thick with blooms, blooms that fall and carpet the ground with colourful petals. A well maintained, Camellia is enough to brighten even the coldest day.

The most well-known bedding plant display is the floral clock in St Kilda Road, Melbourne.

It’s that time of year when the colour of autumn leaves are but a memory and the colour of spring blossom is yet to appear. Even our blue sky is cloaked in a cover of grey clouds. In our climate zone of four distinct seasons, winter can be rather dull and drab - but help is at hand. When deciduous trees are bare of foliage and the roses have lost their blooms, the native Australian plants come right on to centre stage.

The Japanese Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles) is a deciduous or a semi-deciduous shrub. The height varies depending upon the species and can range from about one metre to three metres. The most attractive feature of this plant is the prolific number of flowers that appear on the bare, leafless branches. These flowers create a brilliant display in the late winter when there’s not much else to get excited about. I must admit that I still think of late winter as Daphne time, yet these two plants are both popular, the Daphne grown for its perfume and...
