Wodonga TAFE student finalist for 2022 NSW Training Awards – Apprentice of the Year

Wednesday, 1 June 2022

Skye Sharpe, one of our recently qualified Parks & Gardens apprentices has been successful in her nomination as a finalist for the upcoming 2022 NSW Training Awards – Riverina/Murray Region within the Apprentice of the Year category. The awards are being held in Griffith at 6.30pm Thursday 9 June, 2022.

Skye is one of the first Wodonga TAFE students to be eligible for the awards, hopefully marking a first of many Wodonga TAFE apprentices, trainees and students to be finalists in the future, as Wodonga TAFE looks to further expand trades training into plumbing and electrotechnology.

Skye’s journey began working in various administration and tourism roles over 25 years, before she began to wonder about other potential job opportunities. Being someone who loved gardening at home, Skye’s family encouraged her to apply for a role with Albury City Council working as a Horticulture Apprentice at the Botanic Gardens.

Skye was initially hesitant of the idea, “At first, I thought it was out of the question. Not only because I was mature aged, but as I was a female seeking to work in a non-traditional trade. But looking back now, I am so grateful I did because it has been one of the best career decisions I have made.” Skye commented.

“Keeping on top of everything was certainly hard. Balancing work, studying an apprenticeship and being a mother, took exceptional dedication and time management. I’m extremely proud of myself for my efforts and for setting an example and being a positive role model to my young son, showing that it’s never too late to follow your passion, learn, study and to choose a new career.”

Skye has shown her incredible dedication, desire for the industry, and leadership throughout her apprenticeship. Taking such a big leap, moving from a largely female dominated industry into a mainly male dominated industry within Horticulture. Skye is keen to showcase the industry and to encourage more mature-age people considering an apprenticeship to take the plunge!
