Hands-on practical experience a highlight of Massage courses at Wodonga TAFE

Tuesday, 14 January 2020

As a massage student at Wodonga TAFE you’ll be well set up to be ahead of your competitors in the job market - with plenty of opportunities to learn and practise your skills in real-life remedial massage environments included in your course.

Wodonga TAFE is a major regional provider of on-campus remedial massage and massage therapy courses, and specialises in offering students an abundance of practical work and placement to ensure they graduate with real skills that they can apply immediately in their new workplace.

From early on in the course, every student takes part in supervised practical massage sessions that begin with working in the classroom environment in small teams. Students then extend their expertise to participating in supervised remedial massage clinics that are set up at Wodonga TAFE, with the clinics open to members of the public as well as fellow students and staff.

The Massage students soon become proficient in completing preliminary assessments with each client presenting to the clinic, as well as gaining business management skills while managing and promoting the clinics that they operate during their 15-month Diploma of Remedial Massage. At Diploma level, students also undertake training in more advanced remedial massage techniques.

Coordinator of the Remedial Massage and Massage Therapy courses at Wodonga TAFE, Ms Marijke Gibbons, said that the massage clinics were a highlight of the students’ studies, with every student gaining extensive practical experience in working with real clients.

“The immediate feedback from a real client is invaluable to the students and this helps students to really refine their massage techniques and draw their skills together.”

“The practical sessions with clients enable our students to put everything into practice – to see how the theory and practice all fit together”, said Marijke. “And from a nervous start, the students are buzzing with accomplishment by the end – it’s fantastic to see their confidence and professionalism grow throughout the course!”

“Our industry partners and employers throughout the region confirm the positive benefit of the extensive practical hours that are included in our courses – with students often having employment offers before course completion.”

As well as the supervised on-campus clinics, students have plenty of opportunities to gain practical experience with visits and placement in professional workplaces across the Albury Wodonga region – including organisations such as Latrobe University, Upper Murray Family Care, Wodonga Middle Years College, Albury Wodonga Health, Gateway Health and DHHS. Students also take up many opportunities throughout the year to provide remedial massage support to community events such as women’s health sessions, the Nail Can Hill Run, Relay for Life, and the Latchford Barracks Army Legacy Day.
