From the Classroom to the Cabin: Ryan's Journey into Transport and Logistics

Friday, 16 May 2025

For Ryan Goninon, the Transport and Logistics Employment Pathway course [22648VIC] at Wodonga TAFE was more than just a learning experience, it was a launchpad into a growing industry and a chance to build the skills and confidence needed to kick-start his career close to home.

“I enrolled in the course because I wanted to upskill, gain a Heavy Rigid licence and find local employment in the transport industry,” Ryan says. Referred by CVGT, he saw the program as the perfect opportunity to gain real-world experience and break into the field.

Each day in the course brought a balance of theory and hands-on experience. “There was always a good mix of classroom work and on-the-road learning,” Ryan explains. “I’d learn about a topic in the morning, and in the afternoon, I’d either be out in the truck applying it or seeing how it works in a real-world setting.”

Real Skills, Real Confidence

The hands-on nature of the course, combined with smaller class sizes made a big impact. “Having a smaller group helped me slowly build my confidence and get more comfortable with my skills.”

One key takeaway for Ryan was learning about Chain of Responsibility (CoR), an essential aspect of the industry. “It gave me a deeper understanding of how safety and responsibility play a huge role in transport and that knowledge will definitely help in my future career.”

And, as Ryan quickly discovered, “trucks are a bit more rugged and bumpy than I expected!”

Eyes on the Road Ahead

Now that he’s completed the course, and secured his HR licence, Ryan’s excited to put everything into practice.

“I’m really keen to get a role in the transport industry locally, doing deliveries,” he says. “I’ve already told a few mates about getting my licence, and they’re pumped for me to help out on the farm!”

Ryan’s next step? Reaching out to local trucking companies, even those not advertising, to show his enthusiasm and readiness to join the industry.

A Strong Recommendation

Would Ryan recommend the course to others?

“Absolutely! The course is paced really well, the learning experience is solid, and the teachers are full of knowledge — and they’re really keen to share it.”

With practical experience under his belt, clear goals, and newfound confidence, Ryan is ready to roll.

“I feel pretty confident and comfortable with the general skills needed in the industry,” he says. “I’m excited to jump in, show what I can do, and keep learning as I go.”
