Wodonga TAFE leads electric vehicle research project
Late in 2021 the DELWP Hume Region, Education and Future Skills Working Group commissioned a study into the Electric Vehicle opportunities and workforce skill needs along the Hume Highway corridor between Benalla and Wodonga, and also including Benalla to Shepparton.
Referred to as Driving Smart Specialisation for the Ovens-Murray, the E vehicle research project was conducted from November 2021 to March 2022 and led by Wodonga TAFE.
EnviroPlan Services were contracted to complete the research, with the aims of the project including the following.
- Identify opportunities for a specialised workforce in discrete locations along the Hume corridor (EV mechanics, first responders, fleet managers etc).
- Document and share information about EV investment opportunities in the Hume region relating to skills and social licence; and predicting and/or addressing future growth and demand.
- Advise the Hume education sector in preparation to meet future education requirements to address regional skills growth and demand.
The final report was presented to the Education and Future Skills Working Group on 10 March 2022.
Wodonga TAFE's Manager Community and Industry Engagement, Ms Jennifer Gordon spoke of the exciting opportunities ahead, "This report provides further insight into the growth within the electric vehicle sector, specifically within the Ovens Murray road corridor, and the upskilling and infrastructure investment required to support this growth. Who knows, we could soon see a lithium battery recycling plant or an Electric vehicle assembling plant located in the North East if investors take up the recommendations.”
