Wodonga TAFE’s Business Development Manager, Alex Sweetman, was announced last Thursday as the winner of the inaugural Life Tech Challenge 2017.

The Life Tech Challenge is a competition run by Hume Bank, which aims to benefit the local community by promoting innovation and providing solutions that could improve people’s life.

“This competition aligns our proposition with our commitment to building a next generation community focus. We have a lot of talent in our region throughout schools, universities, and workplaces and new ideas, apps and inventions are being developed every day,” said Hume Bank Chief Executive Officer, David Marshall.

Contest finalists presented their ideas in front of a judging panel. Alex’s app came out on top against some very tough competition. The mobile app that he designed seeks to provide mental health resources and support to those living in our local region. The app offers a variety of functions, including day-to-day tips for getting by, stories from others, forums and information about local mental health services and providers.

Mr Sweetman said it was an honour to win the inaugural Life Tech Challenge. “The technology aspect of it is underpinned by a professional counselling model, but what makes it different is that it will use the latest artificial intelligence and machine learning to have an intuitive, personalised experience”, he added.

A financial prize and an ongoing mentorship from Possumworks, Litton Legal, Creativeworkz and Southern Cross Austereo will help Alex to bring the idea to life.
