Wodonga TAFE’s Massage and Health programs shine brightly thanks to the dedication and passion of Melanie Keenan, a seasoned educator who has transformed her extensive industry experience into a powerful teaching career.
Melanie’s journey into teaching is a testament to her commitment to both the Massage and Health industry and to nurturing the next generation of professionals. With over 20 years in the field, Melanie’s career took a pivotal turn in 2016 when she chose to upgrade her existing Massage qualifications at Wodonga TAFE. Inspired by the outstanding instruction she received and encouraged by her teachers, Melanie pursued the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which led to her role as a sessional teacher. Today, she serves as both the course coordinator and an educator within the Massage program, while also expanding her expertise through a Dual Diploma in Vocational Education.
For Melanie, teaching is not just a profession but a passion that fuels her every day. She revels in the opportunity to inspire and empower her students, watching them grow in confidence and skill. "The best part of my job is witnessing those breakthrough moments when a concept clicks for a student," she shares. Her role allows her to make a tangible difference in her students' lives, guiding them toward their goals and contributing to their success.
Melanie’s educational philosophy is centered on the belief that every student has the potential to succeed with the right support. She is dedicated to creating an inclusive, engaging learning environment for all. “My approach is student-centred, focusing on developing critical thinking, creativity, and lifelong learning skills,” she says. Melanie encourages her students to take charge of their own learning, as well as modelling this by continuously seeking growth and improvement for herself.
For those considering entering the field of Massage, Melanie says its essential to stay current. “Keep learning and developing your skills. Your commitment to your clients will lead to a rewarding career”. Melanie points out that Massage has a positive impact on people’s health. “As the focus on wellness grows, skilled massage therapists are in high demand.” And in terms of what massage therapists can expect to gain from their careers? “There is so much flexibility and diversity in the career paths available. You can work in multidisciplinary clinics or choose to run your own business, there’s so many opportunities to tailor your career to your interests and personal goals.”
Melanie also offers practical advice for students who might be apprehensive about taking on their studies. She suggests starting small, setting realistic goals, and seeking support from peers, mentors, and tutors. Maintaining a positive outlook and focusing on the benefits of education can help you stay motivated.
Melanie finds inspiration in her colleagues, whose dedication to teaching and innovative approach constantly motivates her. The passion and support of her team members highlight the profound impact educators can have on each other and their students.
For prospective students, Wodonga TAFE offers more than just classroom training. “The massage courses here at Wodonga TAFE stand out because of their practical focus,” Melanie says. “Our educators are industry experts that are currently practicing. A hands-on approach ensures our students gain relevant, real-world skills and knowledge directly from professionals actively working in their fields.”
