Youth Spotlight - Lydia

Wednesday, 5 November 2025

After moving from a small country town in Central Queensland to Mount Beauty, Victoria in 2016, Lydia discovered her passion for early childhood education while still in high school. What began as curiosity during her teenage years has since become a meaningful career path.

Having completed her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care in December 2024, Lydia is now pursuing her Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care with Wodonga TAFE. Her motivation is simple yet driven by passion - she loves working with children. Lydia describes them as “fascinating, funny, and full of wonder,” and she takes pride in being a safe, nurturing person that children can rely on. Watching each child’s personality unfold and supporting their development brings her genuine joy and purpose.

Lydia’s journey into early childhood education began in Year 10 during a work experience placement at Mount Beauty Childcare. That hands-on experience changed everything - it revealed a sense of fulfilment she hadn’t found in the traditional classroom. High school had been challenging for Lydia, and at just 16, she made the courageous decision to leave after Year 10 to focus on her Certificate III studies. It was a bold move that reflected both her maturity and her determination to pursue learning that felt meaningful and aligned with her values.

While her passion for early childhood education continues to grow, Lydia is also inspired by the field of social work. She hopes to one day expand her impact by supporting young people in high school settings. Her current work at Kids on Campus demonstrates her commitment to making a difference. Lydia works in the Kalina and Amaroo rooms with children aged 10 weeks to 2 years, applying what she learns in her studies every day.

Balancing work and study is no small feat, but Lydia manages it with focus and discipline. Though the Diploma is completed online, she remains closely connected to her mentors and the TAFE community, often seeking guidance and feedback from her manager and on-site educators.

Lydia says one of her favourite things about early childhood education is how dynamic and hands-on it is. No two days are ever the same, and the children’s energy and humour bring endless smiles. “They constantly surprise me with their hilarious and heartwarming comments,” she says. “Every day feels joyful and full of life.”

Outside of work and study, Lydia leads an active, balanced lifestyle - strength training at the gym, snowboarding in winter, and spending time with friends. These activities keep her grounded and reflect her enthusiasm for living life to the fullest.

Looking ahead, Lydia plans to move to Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Social Work at La Trobe University. Her dream is to become a positive force in the lives of young people - helping them navigate challenges through connection, compassion, and encouragement.

Lydia’s story is one of resilience, clarity, and heart. From a small-town upbringing to a confident professional-in-training, she continues to grow into her purpose: empowering and supporting the next generation.
