Access Education Students Interview Wodonga Leaders in Candid Journalism Project

Wednesday, 5 November 2025

Wodonga TAFE's Access Education students recently welcomed Wodonga Council Mayor Michael Gobel and Deputy Mayor Michelle Cowan for a lively and heartfelt interview session at the McKoy Street campus as part of their journalism studies.

Inspired by the ABC television program The Assembly, the event marked the second year students with intellectual disabilities have taken the lead in interviewing high-profile community figures. The initiative, led by teacher Jan Coyle, aims to build students confidence, communication skills, and real-world experience.

"This is such a valuable experience for our students," said Ms Coyle. "Having the chance to interview Cr Gobel and Cr Cowan not only explores journalism as a career, it also builds their confidence and communication skills. It's a great way for them to connect what they've learned in class to the real world."

The interviews were held in a safe, fun, and expressive environment where students were encouraged to be themselves, even singing and dancing, and the interviewees were not required to answer any questions that made them uncomfortable.

Among the questions posed were: "How can we bring Super Nintendo World to Wodonga?", "How can we address bullying in the workplace, school, or our personal lives?", and contentiously, "Is Wodonga really better than Albury?"

Cr Gobel, a father of three, acknowledged the need for more youth-focused attractions in the region and suggested themed playgrounds could be a starting point. Cr Cowan enthusiastically offered to help students write to Nintendo, saying, "Wodonga is best placed in regional Australia for a Nintendo park."

The conversation also turned deeply personal, with students asking about bullying and loss. Cr Cowan shared her son's experience with bullying and the importance of kindness, while Cr Gobel spoke movingly about the loss of his brother to brain cancer. Students also asked the councillors who they would speak to if they could choose anyone, living or dead. Cr Gobel chose Isaac Newton and his late brother. Cr Cowan chose her mother, who passed away 12 years ago.

The students had prepared for the interviews by attending a journalism workshop with The Border Mail's Jodie Bruton. Student Tyniesha Thrower said she was excited to meet the mayor and learn about his life and hobbies.

The Access Education group will continue their journalism journey with upcoming interviews featuring Wodonga TAFE's Executive Director of Education and Training, Graham Hart, and Board Chair Allison Jenvey (OAM).
