Teacher Spotlight on Sarah Sandeman, a Champion for Early Childhood Education

“My own experience as a student at TAFE, beginning as an enthusiastic 18-year-old, inspired me to support others in their learning journey,” she says. “It is this foundation that drives my commitment to helping students build their confidence and develop the knowledge they need to enter the industry competently and confidently.”
Sarah says the best part of her job is those moments when students begin to connect theory with practice. “It is especially rewarding to witness those ‘I get it’ moments, when students are working closely with children and their theoretical learning begins to connect with real-world practice.”
She is passionate about creating inclusive and reflective learning spaces, where students are encouraged to challenge their own thinking and grow in confidence. “I enjoy working with people from all walks of life, bringing together a diverse range of experiences, backgrounds, and ages. It is incredibly fulfilling to see students become inspired and begin to recognise their own strengths within an industry to which I remain deeply connected and passionate about.”
Sarah’s teaching philosophy is built on empathy, encouragement, and inclusivity. “I believe that every individual has the capacity to learn, grow, and thrive when they are supported with empathy, encouragement, and opportunities that recognise their unique strengths and challenges. My approach to education and learning is grounded in the belief that learning should be meaningful, enjoyable, and inclusive, empowering students and children to overcome adversity with confidence and a strong sense of self-worth.”
Sarah draws inspiration from a range of educational approaches, including the Reggio Emilia philosophy. “The Reggio Emilia approach inspires me because it views children as capable, curious, and full of potential. I’m drawn to its emphasis on child-led learning, where educators act as co-learners and guides to support ongoing learning.”
For those considering a career in Early Childhood Education and Care, Sarah is clear: “Early Childhood Education and Care is a deeply rewarding career for many reasons. As educators we can build lasting and impactful relationships with children and families that we work alongside. Laying the foundations for lifelong learning, development and wellbeing for children but offering a trusted and supportive figure for families during their parenting journey also. By nurturing respectful, curious, and confident children, we're helping to build a more thoughtful, compassionate community. It’s a career that contributes positively to future generations.”
She understands that many students worry about balancing study with other life responsibilities and wants them to know support is available. “Our courses are flexible and can be adapted to suit each learner’s personal experiences, needs, and pace. As a teaching team, we’re always here to support our students in a way that feels right for them.”
