fashion design entries for Natural Fibre Awards

Students from the Fashion Design program at Wodonga TAFE are putting their best garments forward as they participate this week in the “Natural Fibre Fashion Awards” at the upcoming Henty Machinery Field Days.

Eleven students completing either Certificate III in Clothing and Textile Production or Certificate IV in Clothing Production have submitted one of their own creations into the ‘Best Garment Designed by a Student’ category of the awards at Henty, to be shown daily as part of the Country Lifestyle Schedule fashion parades.

Fashion Teacher at Wodonga TAFE, Ms Diedre Liston, said that working towards an entry for the Fashion Awards at Henty was a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their work at an event of national standard.

“These Awards give the students an extra challenge, and the chance to display their talent and hard work, with each garment created as part of this term’s classes”, Ms Liston said.

The Certificate III students have created their piece with inspiration from across the 20th century, so items are as diverse as ‘rockabilly’ to ‘shift dresses’ to ‘geometric architecture-inspired’, whereas the Certificate IV students have showcased an item from the collection that they have created as part of their course.

“Throughout their study, students who are completing the Certificate IV create a collection to outfit four people, so they have selected one of these recently-completed garments to submit as their entry”, explained Ms Liston. “We are very proud that our students have been regular winners of this section of the Awards, which is wonderful recognition of their skills, and the quality of our teaching program”, said Ms Liston.

The Natural Fibre Fashion Awards parade runs at 1pm each day of the Field Days, with the judging and winners to be announced on Thursday 21 September 2017.
