Overview
Take your fitness career to the next level! Certificate IV in Fitness is the qualification that is the industry standard you need to work as a personal trainer in the fitness sector. Extend your Fitness knowledge and gain the specialist skills you need to train individuals or groups of clients, to help them improve their fitness. Learn how to plan, conduct, and evaluate exercise training, and to provide leadership and guidance to clients and staff in a diverse range of fitness business settings. This course content includes: industry opportunities and insights; setting your own goals; gym facility tour and study; customer service placement; practical learning of exercise science; group exercise delivery; community programs/real client interaction/specific populations and working with allied health; nutrition; functional movement appraisals; 12-session personal training clinic; motivational psychology; strength and conditioning; and business.
Delivery Methods
- Blended – Teaching and assessment will be conducted on-campus and online.
- Traineeship – Teaching and assessment will be required to be conducted as part of a traineeship
- Workplace/Blended Industry - A mix of on-campus and teaching/assessment conducted at your workplace and during timetabled sessions

When You Can Enrol
- 1. Blended (on-campus and online) - for people not employed in industry. Apply online now for the course commencing in July 2024.
- 2. Workplace/blended industry - for people employed in industry (fitness setting). Apply online now and commence anytime.
- 3. Traineeship - for people employed in industry (fitness setting) and signed up as a trainee. You will enrol with Wodonga TAFE as part of your traineeship with your employer. The Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) is your first point of contact for queries about a traineeship or apprenticeship, www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au/about-aasn.

On-campus/blended: Full-time 6 months | Workplace/blended industry: 12 months (approx) | Traineeship: 12 months (approx)
Schedule
1. Blended (on-campus and online) - for people not employed in industry. Course delivery will be weekly workshops (Tuesdays 9am-4pm), PLUS up to 15 hours of online learning per week, PLUS personal training clinic conducted outside of class hours (days to be advised). The Personal Training Clinic will run sessions as follows:
- Sessions 1 + 12: Wodonga TAFE campus. Sessions 2-10: PT Fitness, 6 Chisholm Court, Wodonga
- Course dates: Orientation and Course Start July 2024
2. Workplace/blended industry - for people employed in industry (fitness setting). Course delivery will be some Tuesday morning workshops 9am-12pm on campus with some follow up Tuesday Zoom sessions (as per the timetable), PLUS up to 15 hours of online learning per week, PLUS personal training clinic conducted outside of class hours (days to be advised). The Personal Training Clinic will run sessions as follows:
- Sessions 1 + 12: Wodonga TAFE campus. Sessions 2-10: PT Fitness, 6 Chisholm Court, Wodonga OR at your own workplace.
3. Traineeship - for people employed in industry (fitness setting) and signed up as a trainee. - Individual training plans will be developed in consultation with your employer, as part of your traineeship.
Requirements
- Successful completion of Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30315, or SIS30321) or the Certificate III in Fitness Entry Cluster (units from SIS30315, or SIS30321) is a prerequisite for entry into this Certificate IV in Fitness SIS40221.
- Successful applicants for this course will be required to obtain a Working with Children’s Check and may be asked to apply for a National Police check prior to placement. On receipt of your course application you will be emailed an ‘Application Requirement Questionnaire’ electronic form and you will be required to provide evidence of a current Victorian Working With Children’s Check (WWCC).
- COVID-19 vaccination evidence may be asked for at some placement venues. If you do not have evidence of COVID-19 vaccination, you may have limited placement opportunities. Please speak with your Course Coordinator to discuss your placement options if necessary.
Field Placement
Personal Training Clinic: In a first taste of working with a real client 1-1, students must complete a 12-session supervised personal training clinic with a client from the public. Students will conduct health and fitness assessments then develop and deliver a fitness program. Interactions include delivery of a program adapted to a gym environment as well as a home program. Students learn the importance of ongoing communication to address specific client needs which may lead to program modification. Students interact with allied health professionals by way of writing referral letters in an attempt to enhance the clients experience through collaboration.
COVID-19 vaccination evidence may be asked for at some placement venues. If you do not have evidence of COVID-19 vaccination, you may have limited placement opportunities. Please speak with your Course Coordinator to discuss your placement options if necessary.
