Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology

Overview

This trade qualification covers the skills and knowledge to perform a range of service, repair and diagnostic procedures including engines, transmissions, final drive assemblies, brakes, steering, suspensions and electrical systems.

The course is delivered as an apprenticeship: you'll need to be employed in the industry and hold a signed training contract through an Apprenticeship Connect Australia Provider (formerly AASN) before you start.

Training combines on-the-job training with your employer and off-the-job training at our newly built Heavy Vehicle Workshop at our Logic Campus, located at Barnawartha North.

Training Plans

Training Plans are developed in consultation with the employer and apprentice over a 3 year period to provide off-the-job training for either:

• Block Release (4 days per block), or
• Day Release

Duration

Apprenticeship, Part-time: 4 years.

Requirements

• You need basic literacy and numeracy skills.
• You must be employed in the field and/or currently undertaking an apprenticeship.
• Apprentices MUST have their own steel capped boots & appropriate clothing for workshop activities.
• Please note food requirements - There are no canteen facilities available at our Logic Campus. There are vending machines with limited options and a BP Services Station located within 5 minutes drive of the campus, hence you are recommended to bring your own food and drinks when completing a course at Logic.

Assessment

The assessments will enable students to demonstate the underpinning knowledge, skills and attributes rewuired to meet the course outcomes. Three will involve the assessment of your practical and theoretical knowledge through written assignments and practical project work.

Skills Developed

• Safe, environmentally responsible work practices in an automotive/heavy vehicle workshop
• Correct use and maintenance of workshop tools and equipment
• Servicing of heavy commercial vehicles, including hydraulic and final drive systems
• Diesel fuel injection, engine management and compression ignition engine repair
• Electrical systems, including batteries, starting and charging faults
• Cooling, forced induction and emission control system repairs
• Driveline, suspension and steering system repairs
• Air braking and vehicle dynamic control (stability/traction) systems
• Structured diagnostic test strategies across all vehicle systems
• Diagnosis and repair of diesel fuel injection and engine management systems

Certification

By successfully completing this course you will receive an AQF Qualification.
