What is NatHERS?
NatHERS — the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme — is the Australian Government's framework for rating the energy efficiency of homes. An accredited NatHERS assessor visits existing residential properties, evaluates how they perform thermally, and provides homeowners with a star rating and practical advice on improvements.
What does the course involve?
Wodonga TAFE's A4HEREH Home Energy Rating for Existing Homes course is a 13-week, fully online program delivered Thursday evenings (6:00pm – 9:00pm), with a blend of self-directed and live online sessions. Students learn to assess household energy use, use industry-standard software tools, and advise clients on thermal performance improvements.
Who is it for?
The course suits two main groups:
- Existing NatHERS assessors or former Residential Efficiency Scorecard assessors looking to extend their accreditation to existing homes — a streamlined pathway is available
- Career changers with a background in building, construction, or property who want to move into a professional advisory role in the sustainability sector
Are there funded places available?
Yes — a limited number of government-funded places are available for eligible students living in NSW, the ACT, or near the NSW border. Funded applicants must also have access to a LiDAR-enabled Apple device and meet NatHERS accreditation requirements. Fee-for-service places are also available for students who don't meet funding eligibility criteria.
When does it start?
The course commences 13 August 2026. Expressions of interest are open from 1 July 2026. Places are limited, so early expressions of interest are encouraged.
What do I get at the end?
Graduates receive a nationally recognised AQF qualification and a Statement of Attainment for all completed units. Completing the course supports your eligibility to apply for accreditation as a NatHERS Existing Homes Assessor.
What software will I use?
The course uses two industry-standard software tools — AccuRate Enterprise and Magicplan. You'll be introduced to both during your studies, and an online helpdesk is available throughout the course to support you with any software questions.
Do I need any special equipment?
Yes — all students require access to a LiDAR-enabled device to complete their assessments. At this time, magicplan (one of the two course software tools) requires an Apple device. It's worth sorting this out before you enrol.
What happens after I finish — how do I get accredited?
Completing this course supports your eligibility to apply for accreditation as a NatHERS Existing Homes Assessor, but accreditation is a separate step managed through NatHERS. You'll need to meet additional requirements including professional indemnity and public liability insurance, a criminal history check, and signing an assessor agreement. Full details are available through the NatHERS website.
Is this course right for me if I have no building background?
Some familiarity with residential buildings or the property industry is beneficial, particularly for the practical assessment components. If you're unsure whether the course is right for you, we encourage you to get in touch before applying — our team can help you work out if it's a good fit.
How much time do I need each week?
Classes run Thursday evenings from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. On top of that, you'll need to allow time for self-directed study and assessment work each week. The course runs for 13 weeks, with all assessments due by 31 December 2026.
What if I've already completed some of these units?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer may be available if you've previously completed relevant units or have demonstrated skills and experience in this area. Contact us when you apply and we'll assess your eligibility.
