Showcase on Creativity and Hospitality as VCAL students visit from CCW

Students from Catholic College Wodonga rose to the challenge when they visited Wodonga TAFE’s McKoy Street campus late in May, bringing their creative minds and keenness to imagine big and achieve great things as part of a one-day immersive experience in the Creative Industries, and also in Hospitality and Cookery.
On campus for a full day of activities, the secondary college VCAL students had pre-selected from either Creative Industries activities or Hospitality and Cookery activities, with the alternative choices being available to them when they re-visited the campus today, Tuesday 19 June.
The students who opted for the Creative Industries experience worked together on a major creative project that included hands-on activities across the course areas of Photography, Hairdressing, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Music Industry. Students experienced all the intensity of a fast-paced creative workspace as they fulfilled their parts in activities as varied as set design, art direction, music creation and sound production, hair and makeup, fashion, and graphic design. The grand finale of the day for everyone involved was the completion of work towards a take-home piece: a newly-created and printed album cover featuring full graphic design and artwork - for their very own music track CD!
Not to be outdone, the Hospitality and Cookery department ensured the Catholic College VCAL students who chose to ‘experience a day in the life of a hospitality student at Wodonga TAFE’ experienced the best of either front-of-house (restaurant service and set-up) or back-of-house (cookery and kitchen operations) activities.
The VCAL students worked alongside Wodonga TAFE’s Hospitality, Events and Cookery students as they prepared for service in The Valleys Restaurant. On the menu was a ‘Pilipino Street Food Pop Up’, a project led by the Commercial Cookery apprentices and supported by students in Events and Hospitality. The VCAL students had either opted to put on a chef hat and get hands-on experience preparing delicious food in the commercial kitchen, or they chose to use their creative talents in setting up The Valleys Restaurant in the chosen theme of the day, with Hospitality and Events students. The kitchen buzzed all morning as delicious food was prepped and cooked, and then served up as a delicious feast for both groups of VCAL students.
A successful day all round!
On The Valleys Restaurant menu for the students’ second visit today was ‘Mediterranean Tapas’, and the Creative Industries experience was themed as ‘Country and Western’. Everyone was most excited to meet 'Buddy' the pony, who also starred in the Creative team's photography shoot!
