Two classes of VCAL students from Wodonga TAFE connected with nature and engaged with their local community as they took part in a tree planting activity at Willow Park, Pearce Street, Wodonga, to support Planet Ark’s ‘National Tree Day’ this week.

A busy day out in the winter sunshine on Tuesday also meant that the students in our VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) program were able to gain additional hands-on experience that is an important part of their qualification. There couldn't have been a better way to learn more about working with the community, working together as part of a diverse team, and volunteering their time, while putting in the hours for such an important project!

There were approximately 30 students, along with teachers Ms Sharon Nevinson and Mr Peter Bluck, who spent most of the day volunteering at Willow Park (near the Skate Park).

The students supported the ‘Friends of Willow Park Inc’ community group to plant native trees, shrubs and grasses of local provenance throughout areas that require revegetation and new plantings, as well as providing wildlife corridor plantings that encourage native wildlife and birds into the native vegetation that is such a prominent feature of Willow Park.

As well as planting for most of the day, the students also managed to fit in some activity time to work off extra energy!
