Equal opportunity

Wodonga Institute of TAFE is dedicated to the equality of opportunity for students and staff. Our policies aim to encourage people from under-represented or disadvantaged groups to enrol in and enhance their opportunities to complete courses successfully.

The staff from Learner Services are consistently recognised regionally and nationally for their innovative practices in ensuring that the learning needs of students with a disability and students from diverse cultures and backgrounds are met. Training in diversity management diversity is part of Wodonga TAFE's induction process for all staff members, ensuring that 'access for all' is part of our daily work practice.

Grievance and appeals procedures

Wodonga Institute of TAFE has grievance and appeals procedures in place for learners and staff. These procedures generally come into effect after all other attempts to resolve grievances and appeals have been exhausted.

The grievance and appeals procedures reflect substantive fairness and natural justice procedures.

  • Substantive fairness ensures that the outcome is achieved after a fair process has taken place.
  • Natural justice applies to decisions that affect people's rights and interests. Under these guidelines, the person who has had a complaint made about him/her must know what the allegations are and who made them.

All grievance and appeals matters and issues are handled confidentially, impartially, and sympathetically, by someone who is accepted by each party as being impartial.

Resolving disputes

Wodonga Institute of TAFE has a resolution procedure in place to resolve most complaints about unfair treatment, bullying, harassment, and discrimination.

If the issue can be resolved quickly through mediation or negotiation, the process is initially an informal one. If the issue cannot be resolved at this informal stage or if the issue is too severe to be managed in this way, formal procedures can be implemented. The Chief Executive Officer of Wodonga Institute of TAFE is involved when formal resolution procedures are implemented.

The principles of natural justice and substantive fairness apply to all aspects of the resolution process at Wodonga TAFE.
