Hospitality students working real world events

Tuesday, 24 September 2019

Recently our Hospitality students were involved in a real world event that was run at our on-campus business, The Valleys Restaurant.

This event gave them practical experience in what they are learning in their Certificate III in Hospitality course, so further their knowledge and understanding of the skill set required to be successful in the industry.

Being involved in practical events is an opportunity for students to learn about the unexpected parts of their future careers and helps them to gain the confidence in themselves for when the time comes to enter into the workforce.

As part of the course they are required to complete a minimum of 36 service periods (working shifts) in the practical experience side of their course, which they then use to complete their logbook.

Wodonga TAFE provide a set number of work experience opportunities for students to be involved in, with the remainder being up to them to secure for themselves in the industry.

This recent event was a Business Women Albury Wodonga Lunch, which was a sit down function with speeches and a children’s fashion show. There was a set menu and students were involved in all aspects of the day from Bump-in and set up, to front of house, table service and bump out duties. They were required to dress accordingly in hospitality attire of black pants and shoes, collared shirt and long hair tied back.

An event such as this provides the students with an accurate insight into the industry they are studying to enter, while also giving them valuable and necessary customer service experience.

Studying at this level enables students to develop a range of skills fit for work and to gain the edge on their competition by having the practical experience to back up their theory understanding.

Certificate III in Hospitality is on the FREE TAFE list for 2020 with applications now open for the course that will be commencing in February 2020.
