Design students take part in local sporting project

Tuesday, 8 October 2019

Our Certificate IV in Design students were tasked with a creative and fun project for a real industry partner over the winter sports season.  As part of a business collaboration with Fan Pages Australia, they delivered multiple images as part of an in-club awards project.

Working with a range of sports associations across the northeast region, Fan Pages Australia provides high quality images to the clubs each week for in-club awards. These include awards such as Junior Footballer of the Week, Junior and Senior Netballer of the Week, as well as the ever-important award recognising Volunteer of the Week.

To begin the project, design students were provided with a collection of different images taken by photographers around the sports grounds. The students then were tasked with applying their learned design skills to figure out how to best present the person’s image to a professional standard.

As part of the on-campus course, students all work on MacBook Pro Computers and connect with Adobe Creative Cloud to access the very latest in design software. Their classroom is also equipped with a promethean screen that enables the teacher to ‘active cast’ from the student’s screens to a larger screen for class collaboration, encouraging better group learning and discussion. The individual student whose work is being ‘actively cast,’ has the benefit of constructive feedback, which can then be cast back to them for further work and development.

Throughout this particular project, students were also gaining skills in a range of other areas relevant to their future careers in design. Such as, working within the scope of a client brief, working directly with clients, working to deadlines and managing a creative process to the client’s satisfaction, these are all vital skills for a modern designer.

“This project started with an initial business contact and grew to hundreds of images appearing regularly on social media for local sports clubs,” Senior Educator Creative Industries, Theresa Finnimore explains.

“The photographic shots are all quite different and so the students have to make use of techniques such as contouring and removing background clutter to present the award winners’ picture in the best possible way for the client.”

Students quickly learned that working with contributed images in a creative brief, means that at times they are not up to spec and they must rely on their own creativity to present a suitable product.

It was a fantastic learning and development opportunity for our design students to participate in.

Enrolments are open for 2020 design courses. If you are interested in a career in design, then why not check out our website https://www.wodongatafe.edu.au/Courses/Art-Creative-Design-Digital-Media/Graphic-Design-Visual-Arts
