Using the student computer network
We are fortunate at Wodonga TAFE to have access to high-grade computer equipment and software. Our computer laboratories are networked and use the Windows® XP operating system. You require a network account to gain access to the network.
Note that Wodonga TAFE does not support a Macintosh environment. All computer facilities are PC-based and use Microsoft® software for desktop applications.
Network access
You can only access network facilities on campus if you are flexibly enrolled. Please discuss with your teacher.
Your network account will be created for you within three days of your enrolment and after we have accessed your student ID number.
Please note that you will not be issued a student ID number until you have finalised your enrolment through Administration Services. If you take up the deferred fee payment option, your network account will be established when you have signed the deferred payment contract and have paid the first instalment of fees.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have completed the enrolment process before classes start.
Your network account will give you access to standard software applications, printers, the internet (in most cases), email, and limited storage for your files.
Your login comprises two parts, these being your user name and your password.
Your user name is your student ID.
Initially, your password will also be your student ID but will be reset by you when you first log in. Note that your password is case-sensitive and should:
- have spaces
- be a mixture of alphabetical characters and digits
- be a minimum of five characters in length.
The screen will be ready to accept your user name. Enter this, then 'tab' to the password box. For security reasons, your password will not be displayed. Press 'enter' or click 'OK' when you have completed these steps.
Your teacher will help you to log on and set your personalised password for future access. Please note that you should not alter the entry in the domain box as this is the name of the network to which you are logging in.
Network storage
Your network account will give you access to a limited amount of network storage. The maximum amount of storage available to you will be adequate for the course in which you have enrolled. You are actively encouraged to monitor the data stored on your personal network storage drive (T drive) and to regularly delete or remove non-current files.
If you are likely to exceed your limit, you can approach your teacher or program area leader (PAL) to request additional storage, or you can place a formal request at the information and communications technology (ICT) helpdesk to ask that your T drive be written to CD-ROM.
Network security
You must not share details of your access to the network with any other person. You are responsible for what happens whenever your login is used.
If you provide access to other people, you will lose access privileges yourself. Your first offence incurs a two-week suspension from the full network. Further offences will be penalised by at least four weeks' suspension.
Take care to log out when you leave the room. If someone gains access to your account while you are out of the room, you will be responsible for whatever that person does on the network.
To assist you maintain the security of your account, you will be asked to change your password periodically when you log in. A box will pop up and you will be required to enter your current password and then a new password (twice). Please try to use passwords that are significant to you as it is easy to forget passwords if they are meaningless to you.
If you forget or do not know what your password is, please contact the ICT helpdesk (located in the LIRNspace, upstairs in Building A).
Printing
As an enrolled student at Wodonga TAFE, you have 150 printing credits available to you. These printing credits are used each time you send a print job to one of the network printers.
If you print to a black and white laser printer, each printed page is the equivalent of one printing credit. Thus, a five-page document will use up five printing credits.
If you are able to print to a colour laser printer, each printed page is the equivalent of 10 printing credits. Thus, a five-page document printed to this printer will use up 50 printing credits. These printers are costly to run and maintain, so you should only use them when necessary.
Your work should be reviewed on the screen wherever possible to reduce the amount you print.
Your printing will be monitored via the network and when your allocation runs out, you will no longer be able to print. At that stage, you will be required to purchase more printing credits from the ICT helpdesk in the LIRNspace. Charges will be $5 for 50 additional print credits or $10 for 100 additional print credits.
Note that the free 150 print credits apply on a per student per year basis, regardless of whether you are full-time, part-time, or enrolled in more than one course. There are no refunds given for unused print credits.
You may be required as part of your studies to access large reference manuals on the internet. We strongly recommend that you keep these on disks for reference.
TAFE VC online hub
For some units/modules that you study off campus, you may need to access the TAFE VC online hub http://tafevc.com.au or Wodonga TAFE WebCT at TAFE VC. If you have any difficulty accessing your hub or course, please contact your teacher.
