Where this course may lead

This course is for people who are considering establishing a new business or buying an existing business (including franchising). On successful completion, you may go on to specialise in marketing or human resources management. 

What you learn

This course will introduce you to the principles and practice of small business management with the aim to develop your comprehensive business plan by:

  • identifying the technical and business skills required to start and grow your business
  • understanding the business and legal issues involved such as business names, Australian Business Number (ABN), licences, permits and registrations
  • researching your target market, clients, industry and competition
  • undertaking a feasibility study of your business idea or business diversification strategy
  • developing a marketing and e-commerce plan for promoting your product or services
  • developing an operational plan to include the day-to-day running of the business including human resources and OH&S requirements, and
  • developing a comprehensive financial plan to estimate the overall viability of the business venture, which can help with sourcing business finance.

Delivery method and course duration

Course duration 1-2 years

Course mode Traineeship, or part-time (1 night per week), or distance education, or 6 weeks intensive block delivery.

Time spent on training is time spent developing your business. The course is offered full-time and part-time. Distance and flexible study options from home are also available where you negotiate your own study plan.

Entry requirements

  • You may be required to attend an interview before you enrol.

Assessment

The level of competency you develop from your training will be assessed using the following methods:

  • Observation at work, observation in simulated environment (e.g. at TAFE), project/assignment/activity, practical assessment, on-the-job assessment, interview/oral questioning, portfolio of your work, third party (workplace) report, learning journal.

Your teachers will provide you with more information on specific requirements at the start of each unit and they will assist with any support you may need.

Outcomes and accreditations

If you successfully complete this course, you receive an AQF qualification.
