Where this course may lead

This course prepares apprentices for careers in cookery in the hospitality industry. It is also suitable if you want to work as a cook, or if you are employed as a cook and want to formalise your experience.

What you learn

Being a qualified cook involves more than just cooking. In this course, you learn not only how to prepare, cook, and serve food across a range of hospitality settings but also how to manage a kitchen, ensure the hygiene and cleanliness of the kitchen are maintained, design menus, and order ingredients.

Course mode Apprenticeship, or part-time.

Entry requirements

  • There are no formal pre-requisites for this qualification, however, you need to be registered as an apprentice and in current employment.
  • For other students, we recommend that you have completed Year 10 as a minimum, or that you enrol as a mature-aged student.

Assessment

The level of competency you develop from your training will be assessed using the following methods:

  • Observation, questioning, case studies, practical demonstrations, and theory tests in a variety of settings including Wodonga TAFE's Valleys restaurant.

Your teachers will provide you with more information on specific requirements at the start of each unit and they will assist with any support you may need.

Outcomes and accreditations

If you successfully complete this course, you receive an AQF qualification.
