Where this course may lead

Apprentices are employed in a range of fields in the furnishing industry, in areas such as furniture makers, kitchen manufacturers, shop fitters, joiners, reproduction furniture makers, furniture restorers and boat interior fitters.

What you learn

To become a tradesperson in the furnishing industry requires the completion of an Australian apprenticeship in furnishing. To gain an Australian apprenticeship you will need to find a job with an employer willing to supervise your training.

This course is designed to produce tradespeople with appropriate skills in cabinet making.

Details

Delivery method and course duration

Course duration 3 years.

Course mode Once you are employed as an apprentice, you will undertake learning at TAFE for eight three-day blocks for a total of 240 hrs per year, and complete up to 80 hours of training on the job.

Traineeships and apprenticeships

To gain an apprenticeship or traineeship in the furnishing industry, contact group training organisations or your local Australian Apprenticeship Centre, or contact your local cabinet making companies.

Entry requirements

We recommend that you are employed as an apprentice or trainee in cabinet making. Employer's requirements vary but generally they require that you have successfully completed Year 10.

Assessment

The level of competency you develop from your training will be assessed using the following:

  • You will be assessed through a combination of practical work, project work and theory testing.

Your teachers will provide you with more information on specific requirements at the start of each unit and will assist with any support you may need.

Outcomes and accreditations

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a AQF qualification and a statement listing all units.
