Assignment writing

Essay writing can be quite daunting for some people but can be managed very effectively when broken down into a number of steps. You might consider each of the following steps when beginning to write an essay, but make sure you allow time for each one, not just the actual writing.

Consider the topic

  • Do you understand the question? Clarify anything related to the question that is unclear or you don't understand.
  • Identify the key content words.
  • What is the scope of the essay?

Research

  • Brainstorm the direction and content.
  • Look at the set text, readings, lecture notes.
  • Refer to the essay question.

Make notes

  • Make notes as you read through information.
  • Mind-maps or prompts are a useful tool.
  • Collect reference information and make a list as you go.

Planning

  • Revise your notes and list the main points.
  • Organise the main points in a logical manner.
  • Check your notes against the essay question.

Writing

  • Include an introduction, main body and conclusion.
  • Support your points with evidence and include references.
  • Make a draft.

Revision

  • Check that the draft answers the question before you write your final essay.
  • Check punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Ensure all quotes and paraphrasing are correctly presented.
  • Check your list of references for accuracy and make sure it is complete.

Introduction

  • This is the road map for the essay. It should clearly express your point of view and indicate how your ideas and arguments will develop.
  • Outlines the structure of the argument.
  • Make sure to always review your introduction once you have written the body content.

Body

  • The body should present your arguments and evidence.
  • Usually the first sentence of each paragraph covers the main point of the topic, while the following information should expand upon, and support the topic sentence.
  • Paragraphs should flow from one to the next, showing that the information is linked.

Conclusions

  • The conclusion should sum up your arguments.
  • At this point do not add new points or material.
